RADIATOR CAP INSPECTION DURING COOLANT SYSTEM SERVICE



APPLIED VEHICLES:



All 1999 and Later Vehicles



IF YOU CONFIRM:



An applied vehicle has any of the following symptoms:



^ Leaking radiator



^ Overheating cooling system



OR



If you removed the radiator cap for any other reason.



ACTION:

^ Look for a "swollen" (enlarged) radiator cap gasket. See Figure 1a and 1b.



^ An enlarged radiator cap gasket can cause the cap to not vent properly. This can result in coolant loss and overheating.



^ See the Service Procedure on page two for more details.



PARTS INFORMATION



See the "FAST" parts system for the Radiator Cap applicable to the vehicle you're working on.



SERVICE PROCEDURE



During normal scheduled maintenance or for a vehicle with one of the symptoms listed under IF YOU CONFIRM inspect the Black Rubber Gasket



on the end of the Metal Plunger of the radiator cap. View the Black Rubber Gasket by looking at the bottom side of the radiator cap.



A. The Black Rubber Gasket should be smaller in diameter than the Metal Plunger under it (see Figure 2).



If the Metal Plunger can be seen around the edge of the Black Rubber Gasket and the gasket is clean without any deposits of a waxy residue or



foreign material the gasket is OK.



NOTE:



Make sure you pressure test the radiator cap and confirm it opens and closes at the correct specifications.

B. If the Metal Plunger cannot be seen around the edge of the Black Rubber Gasket (see Figure 3) the radiator cap must be replaced.



^ Thoroughly wipe out the radiator filler neck to remove any waxy residue or foreign material.



^ Install a new radiator cap.



C. If the Metal Plunger can be seen around the edge of the Black Rubber Gasket but there are deposits of waxy residue or foreign material on the



gasket or the metal retainer (see Figure 4) the radiator cap must be replaced.



^ Thoroughly wipe out the radiator filler neck to remove any waxy residue or foreign material.



^ Install a new radiator cap.

APPLIED VEHICLES:



All 2003 Infiniti Vehicles and later - equipped with XM(R) or SIRIUS(TM) Satellite Radio Receiver and Service



IF YOU CONFIRM:



A satellite (SAT) radio related incident has occurred on an Infiniti vehicle factory equipped with SAT radio.



ACTIONS:



First, refer to Chart A for a list of Infiniti vehicles that are pre-wired for SAT radio.



Second, refer to the Service Information section in this bulletin.



^ The Audio unit, SAT receiver, and Satellite Service may be OK.



Third, refer to the Service Procedure section shown in this bulletin.



^ The Service Procedure section contains a Diagnostic Flowchart. It will provide Symptoms and Possible Causes to help you judge the SAT radio



condition.



IMPORTANT:



The purpose of ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service



Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this procedure.



SERVICE INFORMATION

Vehicles with the hardware to receive SAT Radio can be identified by a special antenna (see Figure 1).



In order for SAT radio to work the vehicle must have all of the following:



^ SAT antenna (see Figure 1) and "N-Buss" harness (hidden in the vehicle)



^ Either a XM(R) or SIRIUS(TM) SAT receiver (hidden in the vehicle)*



^ A current, active and registered subscription to the appropriate* SAT radio provider



*IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT SAT:



^ The type of SAT receiver the vehicle has XM(R) or SIRIUS(TM) determines which service is available for subscription.



^ A subscription registers to the SAT receiver not to the vehicle's in-dash Audio (head) unit harness etc.



^ Each SAT receiver has an Electronic Serial Number (ESN) used to register the subscription.



^ For SAT radio the Audio (head) unit is only a controller/sound amplifier. SAT radio reception occurs in and by the SAT receiver.



^ The quality of SAT radio reception just like regular radio can still be affected by environmental factors like buildings tunnels geographic



location etc. (For more information on SAT reception see Nissan TechTalk issue Sept./Oct. 2002)



^ Depending on the year and model of the vehicle, the SAT receiver can be located either in the rear of the vehicle or under the dashboard.

Service Procedure



TUNING TO PREVIEW CHANNEL



1. Determine which Satellite Radio receiver is installed in the vehicle (XM(R) or SIRIUS(TM)) as follows:



a. Turn the audio unit "ON".



b. Select SAT function (varies from model to model consult the Owner's Manual).



c. Try to tune in the Preview Channel for the receiver.

^ The Preview Channel for XM(R) is Channel 001. When you turn to Channel 001, the audio display will show "XM CH - 001" for a



couple of seconds then it will show "XM Preview" (see Figure 2).



^ The Preview Channel for SIRIUS(TM) is Channel 184. When you turn to Channel 184 the audio display will show "SR CH - 184".



Special Note For SIRIUS(TM) Preview Channels:



A SIRIUS(TM) receiver will receive the Preview Channel 184 and the 15 select channels for 180 days from the moment the receiver is first



turned on. After 180 days the preview channels will not be available.

SAT RADIO "ERROR" CODES



CHECK ANTENNA



1. Check antenna lead for cuts or wear.

2. Check antenna leads for proper installation (see Figure 3).



3. Perform electrical check of antenna looking for shorts or opens:



See Figure 3 for a view of the GREEN (terrestrial) and YELLOW (satellite) connectors plugged into an installed satellite receiver.



a. Unplug both antenna leads (see Figure 4) from the receiver. Check the connector for signs of water entry and/or corrosion.

b. Check each lead one at a time (see Figure 5).



^ The connector should be clean and dry inside with no visible corrosion.



^ There should be continuity from the center conductor to the shield.



^ The resistance value between the center conductor and the shield should match a "known good" cable or a new cable.



^ Write down your findings on the repair order for future reference.



c. Return to the SAT RADIO DIAGNOSTIC FLOWCHART.



REPLACE THE SAT ANTENNA



NOTE:



Installation instructions for all vehicles are available at www.NNAnet.com



A. Remove the existing antenna as follows:



1) Disconnect the cable connector from the receiver.



DO NOT CUT THE ANTENNA CABLE!



2) Pull up the antenna's tail. Working from the tail to the front of the vehicle slide a nylon cord or equivalent (example: dental floss 6



lb. fishing line) between the antenna and the vehicle's roof (see Figure 6).



3) Cut through the adhesive pad between the antenna module and vehicle's roof using a side-to-side cutting motion (see Figure 6).

NOTE:



There are magnets under the base of the antenna. You may not be able to slide the cord all the way through to the front.



If needed Carefully apply heat with a heat gun to the antenna to soften the existing adhesive-backed tape. Keep the heat gun's nozzle at



least 12 inches away from the antenna.



CAUTION:



Too much heat will damage the vehicle's paint or surrounding parts (rear window molding, window finishers, etc.).



Only an experienced paint technician who is familiar with paint temperature limitations should use a heat gun.



Important Points



^ DO NOT overheat the antenna or roof. Heat the area just enough to soften the adhesive tape for easy removal.



^ The heat gun wattage should not exceed 1400 watts.



^ Do not hold the heat gun nozzle closer than 12 inches from the roof surface. Also do not hold the heat gun in one position. Keep the



nozzle moving from side to side to evenly heat the tape.



4) Slowly pull up on the antenna and remove it.



DO NOT CUT THE ANTENNA CABLE!



B. Use a 50/50 alcohol/water solution to clean the area of the roof where the antenna was located of any small pieces of the tape or



adhesive.



C. Prepare the new antenna for mounting using the adhesive tape included in the antenna kit. You will also need to use clear butyl gum and



black tape for installation.



D. Install the replacement antenna. Be sure to handle the antenna wires carefully. Do not bend kink or push on the wires. Doing so may



damage the wires.



E. Re-connect the cable connector to the receiver.



F. Turn the ignition key to OFF position wait for 10 seconds then turn the ignition key to ACC position. Wait for the receiver to restart. If



the original symptom still exists SAT RADIO DIAGNOSTIC FLOWCHART.



GETTING THE SAT RADIO ESN & CONTACTING THE PROVIDER



1. Determine which Satellite Radio receiver is installed in the vehicle (XM(R) or SIRIUS(TM)):



a. Turn the audio unit "ON".



b. Push the SAT button.



c. Tune in the Preview Channel for the receiver.



^ The Preview Channel for XM(R) is Channel 001. A XM(R) receiver will display "XM1 CH - 001" (see Figure 2) on the Audio unit



face.



^ The Preview Channel for SIRIUS(TM) is Channel 184. A SIRIUS(TM) receiver will display "SR1 CH - 184" on the Audio unit



face.



2. Now tune to Channel 0.



a. The Audio unit face will first display "RADIO ID".



b. Then the Audio unit face will display a letter-number (alpha-numeric) code. XM(R) has an eight character letter-number code while



SIRIUS(TM) has a twelve character letter-number code. This code is the receiver ESN (electronic serial number).



c. Write down the code in the space provided below.

3. Call the applicable service provider.



^ The number for XM(R) is: 1 (800) 852-9696.



^ The number for SIRIUS(TM) is: 1 (888) 539-SIRI.

a. Identify yourself as a repair station working with a customer's receiver.



b. Ask them to verify if a current subscription is applied to this receiver.



c. Give them the ESN (RADIO ID) you wrote down in step 2c above.



d. While you have them on the phone return to the SAT RADIO DIAGNOSTIC FLOWCHART. The provider's answer to the subscription



question (3b) will determine the next step.



REPLACEMENT OF THE SAT RECEIVER



The location of the satellite receiver varies from vehicle to vehicle. Some vehicles have the receiver located in the rear. Other vehicles have the



receiver located under the dashboard. Figure 7 shows a rear-mounted receiver.



When replacing a receiver note that vehicle-specific instructions are provided at www.NNAnet.com.



Special Note - SIRIUS(TM) Receivers ONLY:



A remanufactured SIRIUS(TM) receiver may not receive the Preview Channel 184 and the 15 select channels. Reason: The remanufactured receiver



was in use for more than 180 days.



To receive the preview channels (or any other specific channels) the remanufactured receiver must be reactivated. Contact SIRIUS(TM) to do this.

TIRE PRESSURE INFORMATION FOR VEHICLES WITH TPMS



The publication data on this bulletin has been amended to include newest models.



APPLIED VEHICLES:



All Infiniti vehicles with Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS)



SERVICE INFORMATION



The Low Tire Pressure Warning Lamp will illuminate (steady not flashing) if the tire pressure is low in any of the four road tires.



^ This is not an indication of a malfunction. Rather it is a signal to the driver that the tire pressure in the vehicle must be adjusted.



Tire pressure must be adjusted/corrected at or above the pressure shown on the TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION label before the Low Tire



Pressure Warning Light will go OFF.



^ Regular tire pressure maintenance such as described in this bulletin is not covered under the warranty.



The air pressure inside a tire can change due to several factors such as:



^ Seasonal temperature change



^ Tire temperature change due to driving



^ Natural pressure loss over time



Compensate for the above temperature factors when adjusting and setting tire pressure.



Each vehicle is equipped from the factory with a TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION label.

This label lists the COLD tire pressure setting for the original tires on the specific vehicle.



NOTE:



Tires are considered COLD after the vehicle has been parked for 3 or more hours or driven less than 1 mile at moderate speeds.



When setting / adjusting tire pressure, make sure to use an accurate tire pressure gauge.



Use the following information for reference:



Temperature:



^ Tire pressure changes approximately 0.8 psi for every 10锟斤拷F of temperature change. As temperature decreases, pressure decreases.



^ Tire pressure may change 3 - 5 psi between a Cold reading and a reading taken just after the vehicle has been driven for several miles.



^ Seasonal temperature change can result in tire pressure that is low enough to turn on the Low Tire Pressure Warning Light.



Example 1 - Seasonal Temperature Change:



^ The temperature of the vehicle is 70锟斤拷F after sitting in the shop.



^ Ambient temperature outside the shop is 30锟斤拷F or will soon fall to 30锟斤拷F due to seasonal change.



^ Recommended pressure on the TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION label is 35 psi.



^ The tire pressure should be compensated an additional +3 psi and adjusted to 38 psi to avoid dropping below the label value when the vehicle



experiences cooler ambient air temperature.



^ Compensation should also be used in the PDI process as needed.



Example 2 - WARM Tires:



^ A vehicle arrives to the dealer after being driven across town.



^ The WARM tire pressure reading is 32 psi.



^ Recommended COLD tire pressure on the TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION label is 35 psi.



^ The tire pressure should be compensated an additional +3 psi and adjusted to 38 psi to avoid dropping below the label value when the tires cool.



Natural tire pressure loss overtime:

^ Vehicle tire pressure can naturally decrease by approximately 1.0 - 1.5 psi per month. This will vary due to seasonal temperature change.



^ After 6 to 8 months tire pressure may be low enough to turn ON the Low Tire Pressure Warning Light.



High Altitude



^ At high altitude locations a standard tire pressure gauge may show the tire pressure higher than the TPMS system. If the gauge reading is not



accounted for this could result in turning ON the Low Tire Pressure Warning Light.



^ Standard tire pressure gauge readings increase about 1.0 psi for every 2,200 ft of altitude increase above sea level (up to 10,000 ft). See Graph 3.



^ For example if the TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION label reads 33 psi then at an elevation of 5,280 ft, the cold inflation pressure using a



gauge should be increased 2.5 psi to 35.5 psi."



NOTE:



In the above example, C-III, Signal Tech II, or the vehicle information display (if equipped) would show a tire pressure of 33 psi. If needed use



C-III or Signal Tech-II to confirm tire pressure.



NOTE:



^ After correcting the tire pressure the vehicle may need to be driven at speeds above 16 mph to activate the TPMS and turn off the low tire pressure



warning light.



^ If pressure compensation for temperature is used, the pressure should be re-checked and adjusted at a later time when the tires are cold.



^ If after turning the ignition ON, the TPMS light flashes for one minute and then turns solid, refer to ITB10-023 or ITB09-050.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



NOTE:



The procedure in this bulletin will require placing your entire arm into the fuel tank. The fuel tank must be empty for this procedure.



1. Remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank.



^ Refer to Section FL in the Service Manual for fuel pump removal information.



^ CAUTION:



The fuel tank is required to be less than 7/8 full before removing the fuel pump in order to prevent fuel spillage from the fuel pump opening.



2. Cut / split the side of a piece of rubber tube (vacuum line) and place it on the edge of the fuel pump opening.



^ This will protect your hands and arms from the sharp edge of the fuel tank.



Before continuing with this procedure:



^ Make sure the fuel tank is empty.

^ Read through all of the steps and understand the procedure.



3. Hold the Cut Bracket (cover) so the open side of the cover is towards the passenger side of the vehicle.



NOTE:



There is very little room inside the tank to maneuver the cover. You should hold it in the installation direction as you put it into the tank.



4. While holding the cover, reach into the tank.



5. Maneuver the cover to the FLV valve and snap the cover onto the valve.

^ The FLV valve is located in the middle upper area of the tank. Refer to Figures 4 through 8.



^ See Photos above (Figures 5 - 8).



6. Use a mirror to confirm the cover is installed correctly.

7. Reinstall all parts removed in reverse order.



NOTE:



Make sure to use a new 0-ring (P/N 17342 - 01A00) on the fuel pump opening.

SERVICE INFORMATION



^ This bulletin covers a new version of the Infiniti Vehicle Immobilizer System/Nissan Anti-Theft System (IVIS/NATS). This system, referred to



as NATS", is standard equipment on the Applied Vehicles listed above.



^ This new version of NATS uses advanced anti-theft functions which are "password protected". This helps prevent "unauthorized access" into the



NATS registration procedure.



^ To obtain the password from ASIST, first use CONSULT-II to get the "BCM-specific" 5-digit number (PIN) code from the vehicle.



^ Unlike earlier NATS systems, this NATS system DOES NOT need to be Re-Initialized if the Electronic Control Unit (ECM) is replaced.



NOTE:



The ECM and Body Control Module (BCM) do work together, but the BCM in this new system controls the information necessary to "tell"



the ECM to start the vehicle.



IMPORTANT:



The NATS "Control Unit (C/U) Initialization and Key Registration" Procedure in this bulletin is for the Applied Vehicles only. Do not use this



procedure on other NATS-equipped vehicles.



System Components (see Figure 1)



^ NATS ignition key (with transponder chip).

^ NATS antenna amplifier located around the ignition key cylinder.



^ Body Control Module (BCM)



^ Engine Control Module (ECM)



^ Security indicator (Light Emitting Diode or LED) located on the dash.



System Operation



^ The NATS uses a digital radio frequency (RF) to transmit a key code between the NATS key ID chip (which is imbedded in the NATS ignition



key) and the BCM.



^ When a registered NATS key transmits a valid (good) key code the BCM will send a signal to the ECM that will allow the engine to start.



^ If the key doesn't "send" a good code the BCM will not transmit a valid code to the ECM and the ECM will not let the engine start.



Special Service Notes:



Key Registration Required



^ NATS will not allow the engine to start without the use of a registered ignition key.



^ Previous and current Infiniti models with NATS have a Key I.D. chip in the ignition key head (see Figure 2).



^ If a vehicle will not start and the Dash Security Lamp is ON solid it is possible that the ignition keys were not properly registered into the



vehicle's Body Control Module (BCM).



^ When a NATS ignition key is replaced a new key added or the BCM is replaced the Control Unit (C/U) Initialization and Key Registration



MUST BE PERFORMED or THE ENGINE WILL NOT START.



^ If a new ignition key(s) needs to be added or if any ignition key needs to be re-registered ALL other ignition keys must be re-registered at the



same time or they will no longer start the engine.



Other Important Information



^ When a NATS key is manufactured the NATS key code is permanently encoded to the NATS key ID chip. This code cannot be changed.



^ It is recommend to use only Infiniti service parts (key blanks).



^ NATS only allows the vehicle to start. It does not activate the vehicle theft warning system.



^ Each vehicle is supplied from the factory with three registered NATS ignition keys. A maximum of five ignition keys can be registered to the



NATS.



Transponders



If a NATS-equipped vehicle experiences an intermittent no-start condition another transponder could be causing interference (blocking the



signal).



Examples of transponder interference:

^ Other vehicle ignition keys that have transponders (key I.D. chips). Either from the same vehicle or another model.



^ Transponders such as the Mobil Speedpass(R) may be a source of interference (see Figure 3).



^ These items may be too close (3/4 to 1 inch) to the registered key that is being used to start the vehicle.



^ In cases of interference from other keys or transponders there will be a "DIFFERENCE OF KEY" code stored in the Engine Control Module



(ECM). The MIL will not turn "ON" for this code.



^ Once the vehicle is started transponder interference will not cause the engine to stall.



^ To avoid transponder interference, advise the customer to keep all other transponders on separate key rings.



SERVICE PROCEDURE



NATS C/U Initialization (using the 4-Digit PIN Code) and Key Registration



^ It is highly recommended that you read through the entire service procedure before doing it for the first time.



1st step; Prepare



1. Collect all existing ignition keys from the customer.



Note:



ANY KEYS THAT ARE NOT REGISTERED AT THIS TIME WILL NO LONGER START THE VEHICLE.



2. Separate all NATS ignition keys and other transponders away from each other.



^ Take them off the key ring.



^ You must keep them separate during the whole key registration process.



2nd step; Get the "BCM-specific" 5-Digit Number Code



1. Insert the NATS (purple) Program Card into slot A of the CONSULT-II (see Figure 4).



2. Connect CONSULT-II to the vehicles data link connector.



^ Use the CONSULT-II CAN converter and cable set to do this.



3. Insert a key into the ignition and turn the Ignition ON. Do Not start the engine.

4. Wait for the CONSULT-II system software to "load". Then select the following on the CONSULT-II screen:



[START] > [OTHER] > [OK] > [NATS BCM] Or [S/ENT] > [PIN READ] (CONSULT-II will display and print the BCM-Specific 5-digit



code.)



5. Take the printout and go to an ASIST terminal to "decode" the BCM-Specific 5-digit code.



3rd step; Decode the number



1. From the ASIST Main Menu screen click on Information Tool Box.



2. From the "Information Tool Box" screen click on NATS Decoder button (see Figure 5).



3. Follow the steps in Figure 6.



NOTE:



^ The letter "0" is not used in the 5-digit number code. Anything that looks like an "0" is really the number zero "0".



4th step; C/U Initialization Procedure



1. Select [BACK] twice on the CONSULT-II screen. It should return to the SELECT SYSTEM screen.

2. Select [NATS V 5.0].



3. Touch [C/U INITIALIZATION].



4. On the CONSULT-II IMMU INITIALIZATION touch screen:



^ Type in the 4-digit PIN.



^ You wrote it down from ASIST IVIS/NVIS (NATS) screen (step 3).



5. Touch [START] on CONSULT-II to perform C/U INITIALIZATION.



6. When C/U INITIALIZATION is complete:



a. INITIALIZATION COMPLETED will be displayed on the IMMU INITIALIZATION screen.



b. Turn ignition key to the "OFF/LOCK" position and pull it out.



c. WAIT AT LEAST 5 SECONDS.



d. Go to 5th step; Key Registration.



NOTE:



The key that you just used is NOT registered vet.



5th step; Key Registration



1. Insert a key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position.



Do not start the engine.



2. Wait at least 5 seconds (the Security Lamp will flash 5 times, then it will stop).



3. Turn the key to "OFF/LOCK" and remove it.



^ The key is now registered. Keep it separate from the other keys.



IMPORTANT:



Keep the first REGISTERED key separate from ALL the other keys for right now. DO NOT MIX UP KEYS!



NOTE:



^ The first registered key will be used later in step 4 (below). Keep it separate from all other keys.



^ Keep the "registered" keys and the "unregistered" keys in different piles during this process.



^ Accidentally inserting an already "registered" key into the ignition at this point will drop the system out of the registration mode.



^ If this happens you will have to start all over again. Go back to # 1 of 4th step (C/U Initialization); and restart from there.



4. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 for all remaining "unregistered" keys.



^ Remember a maximum of five keys can be registered into the system.



5. After registering and removing the last key;



^ Re-insert the first registered key and



^ turn the key to the ON position for 5 seconds.



^ This will take the system out of the key registration mode.



NOTE:



The Security Lamp will not flash during this 5-second period.



6. Turn the key to the "OFF" position.

7. Wait for the Security Lamp to start blinking (approximately 5 seconds).



^ This indicates the completion of Key ID Registration and C/U Initialization.



^ Proceed to Key Confirmation (Step 6).



6th step; Key "Confirmation" (check)



1. Confirm that the Security Indicator Lamp on the dash is blinking.



This verifies the completion of the Key ID Registration procedure.



2. Confirm all keys operate (start the engine) as follows:



a. Start the engine.



b. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key.



c. Watch and wait for the Security Indicator Lamp to begin blinking (approximately 5 seconds).



^ This indicates the system has reset.



^ You must wait for the system to reset between key checks or key operation will not be confirmed.



d. Start the engine using the next key.



e. Repeat steps a - c for all keys that were registered.



3. Press [BACK] on the CONSULT-II screen.



4. Press [BACK] on the CONSULT-II screen again.



5. Put any registered key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position.



6. Select [SELF-DIAGNOSIS RESULTS] to check for DTC's.



^ In rare cases "CHAIN OF ECM-IMMU" or other DTC's may be stored during the Key Registration process.



^ If DTC's are stored press [ERASE] to clear them.



7. Turn the ignition to "LOCK" and remove the key.



8. Turn CONSULT-II OFF and disconnect it from the vehicle.

Critical Steps for Antenna Installation



^ Ambient temperature must be above 20锟斤拷C (68锟斤拷 F). If not, tape and mating surface must be heated to at least 20锟斤拷C (68锟斤拷 F).



^ Make sure technician hands, gloves, or anything that comes into contact with the feeder cover or mating surface is clean and free from



contaminants.



^ Mating surface must be free of contaminants and cleaned with 50/50 isopropyl alcohol / water solution.



^ Apply adhesion promoter to the glass surface per the installation instructions.



^ Do not contaminate the tape surface or mating surface prior to installation.



^ Be aware the feeder cover will stick instantly to the prepared and primed surface and CANNOT be repositioned. Feeder cover alignment and



positioning must be DONE prior to attachment.



^ Apply smooth and even pressure on the feeder cover to ensure 100% wet-out.



^ Keep the vehicle inside in a warm area (above 20锟斤拷C or 68锟斤拷 F) for at least an hour after installation to help promote initial curing of the tape.



^ Advise the customer to avoid any activity which would impose pressure on the feeder cover (such as a car wash) within the first 48 hours.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



1. Release the fuel pressure from the fuel system using CONSULT-II (or other suitable method). Follow the procedure in the "EC" section of the



ESM.



2. Use a suitable device to remove as much fuel as possible from the fuel tank.



WARNING:



Follow all CAUTIONS and WARNINGS provided in the Service Manual.



3. Remove the fuel level sensor. Refer to the FE section of the ESM.



WARNING:



The fuel level sensor opening and internal baffle have edges that are sharp.



4. You'll be working inside the fuel tank. To prevent injury place a split piece of rubber vacuum hose electrical harness cover tape or other



suitable covering



^ Apply tape onto the edge of the fuel level sensor opening. (see Figure 2)

^ Apply an electrical harness cover to the edge of the vented baffle inside the tank. (see Figure 3 cut-away view from bottom of tank)



5. Reach inside the tank and gently bend the baffle away from you so you can reach under it. However don't overdo it. If you bend it too far you



won't be able to reach the shutter valve on the end of the tank inlet.



6. Remove the shutter valve with a twisting motion while pulling it straight off. (see Figure 4 cut-away view from bottom of tank)



7. Install the shutter valve listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.



^ Push it on the end of the tube with a twisting motion



^ Turn it until a "snap" is heard and felt



^ Confirming the tab locks to the hole. (shown in Figure 4)

^ The hole is on the end of the fuel inlet tube. (see Figure 5)



8. Gently bend the baffle back to it's original position.



9. Remove the protectors you installed to the tank in step 4. (opening and baffle)



10. Install the new fuel level sensor 0-ring in the groove on the fuel tank.



11. Re-install the fuel level sensor on the fuel tank. Refer to the FE section of the ESM.



12. Add the removed quantity of fuel to the tank.

This bulletin has been amended. Several Changes were made at "Step 7: Confirm All SRTs "COMPLETE"."



APPLIED VEHICLES: 1996 and newer Model Years as required by State Emissions Inspections Regulations.



SERVICE INFORMATION



As part of an enhanced emissions test for Inspection & Maintenance (I/M) some States may require the System Readiness Test (SRT) status be



checked.



^ The SRT is used to indicate whether the engine control module (ECM) has completed self diagnosis of major emissions systems and components.



^ In these instances the State may require completion of the SRT before permitting the emissions inspection to proceed.



The State Emissions Inspection Station may advise an Infiniti customer to return to the dealership for service due to one or more SRT items coming



up "INCOMPLETE." Use the information in this Bulletin to help you "COMPLETE" the SRT.



^ In most cases the ECM will automatically complete its self diagnosis cycle during normal vehicle usage and the SRT status will indicate



"COMPLETE" for each applicable system.



^ Once indicating "COMPLETE" the SRT status remains "COMPLETE" until the Self Diagnosis memory is erased.



^ Occasionally certain portions of the self diagnostic test may not be completed as a result of the customers normal driving pattern. In these cases



the SRT will indicate "INCOMPLETE" for these items.



NOTE: The SRT will also indicate "INCOMPLETE" if:



^ The self diagnosis memory is erased for any reason or



^ The ECM memory power supply is interrupted for several hours.



This bulletin contains information to help you perform a comprehensive road test (Drive Pattern) that enables the ECM to complete the SRT.



^ A separate Drive Pattern sheet for each 1996 and 1997 vehicle variation is included with this Bulletin.



^ For 1998 and newer vehicles refer to the EC section of the appropriate Service Manual for the required Drive Pattern. They are listed under On



Board Diagnostic> System Readiness Test.



NOTE:



You must select the Drive Pattern that correctly corresponds with all variables for the vehicle being serviced (i.e. model model year engine emissions



certification transmission powentrain and for 1996/1997 models ECM part number.



NOTE:



To ensure all ECM Self Test requirements are met it is important to drive the entire Drive Pattern even if only one SRT item indicates



"INCOMPLETE."

Service Procedure

SRT WORKFLOW



Step 1: Check for DTC



1. Use a CONSULT tool to check for any stored DTCs.



^ If any DTCs are stored they must be repaired at this time.



^ Refer to ASIST for diagnostic and repair information.



NOTE:



Normal warranty coverage will apply for DTC repairs.



2. If no DTCs are stored go to the next step.



NOTE:



DO NOT touch Erase or you will lose previously completed SRTs.



Step 2: Check SRT Status

Check the SRT Status (Complete or Incomplete).



^ Use the appropriate CONSULT tool.



^ For older vehicles a Generic Scan Tool may be needed to check SRT status.



NOTE:



In some cases the normal driving that occurs between the time the vehicle was referred by the State Emissions Inspection Station and it is



brought into the dealership for SRT evaluation may allow the ECM to complete the SRTs. If this occurs no further action is necessary.



Always check SRT status before performing the SRT Drive Pattern.



Step 3: Identify the Vehicle



You must select the Drive Pattern that correctly corresponds with all variables for the vehicle being serviced refer to image below:



Step 4: Obtain ECM Part Number (1996 and 1997 models only)



1. Use a CONSULT tool to obtain the ECM part number.



2. Write the ECM part number in the space provided above.

3. Compare the vehicles ECM part number with the list of ECM part numbers provided in the Infiniti SRT System Chart above to determine the



Drive Pattern for the vehicle being inspected.



NOTE:



For 1996 and 1997 models; if the vehicles ECM part number does not match a part number listed on the SRT System Chart for that vehicle



either 1) the vehicle was identified incorrectly or 2) the vehicle has the wrong ECM installed. The SRT cannot be completed with the



incorrect ECM.



Step 5: SRT Road Test (perform Drive Pattern)



To properly obtain SRT readings of "COMPLETE" it is necessary to drive the vehicle under the exact conditions required by the vehicle's



ECM.



Be sure to select the correct Drive Pattern. The SRTs will not complete if the wrong drive pattern for that vehicle is used.



1. Select the Drive Pattern based on the Vehicle Identification (see Step 3).



^ For 1996 and 1997 vehicles:



> This bulletin contains a specific Driving Pattern for every 1996 and 1997 Infiniti vehicle.



> Use the Bookmark on the left side of the ASIST screen to choose the correct model and year.



> Verify that the vehicle ECM P/N matches EXACTLY an ECM P/N listed on the Drive Pattern sheet you chose.



> Print the Drive Pattern to take with you.



^ For 1998 and newer vehicles refer to the EC section in the appropriate Service Manual for the required Drive Pattern. It is listed under



On-Board Diagnostics> System Readiness Test.



> Print the Drive Pattern to take with you.

2. Prior to driving the vehicle review the Drive Pattern and prepare to complete it from start to finish:



^ Review the Pre-Check items listed on the drive pattern and ensure all conditions are met.



^ Determine the vehicle speeds required by the drive pattern.



^ Plan your route to minimize traffic and traffic signals that might interrupt the Drive Pattern tasks.



^ Review the Drive Pattern section(s) that must be restarted if you are interrupted.



^ Do not use the ASCD (cruise control) during any section of the Drive Pattern that contains the "No ASCD symbol."



^ Some EVAP-equipped vehicles will require that fuel be added to the tank between the first and second trip. Be prepared to purchase fuel



or plan your route to accommodate this step.



^ For these EVAP-equipped vehicles begin the road test with less than 1/2 tank of fuel. If the fuel level is greater than 1/2, more time may be



required to complete the EVAP sections of the Drive Pattern and you may not be able to add fuel as required.



3. Review the Drive Pattern for any input signals that need to be monitored during the drive.



^ If needed, Connect a CONSULT tool to the vehicle to monitor required signals.



NOTE:



^ Monitor the Fuel Temperature if the EVAP SRT is "INCOMPLETE." One part of the EVAP SRT diagnostic logic requires a 3锟斤拷C



increase in fuel temperature from the time the ignition key is turned to ON as part of the test criteria. Fluctuations in the fuel



temperature reading can extend the time required for the EVAP SRT to indicate "COMPLETE." If the fuel temperature change is not



sufficient after completing the SRT Drive pattern idle the vehicle until a fuel temperature increase of at least 3锟斤拷C is noted or until the



EVAP SRT indicates "COMPLETE."



^ If the fuel temperature increases 3锟斤拷C or more but the SRT still indicates "INCOMPLETE" the SRT Drive Pattern may need to be



repeated.



4. Note the following items before starting the Drive Pattern:



IMPORTANT:



Nissan requires using a driver and an assistant to conduct SRT driving patterns. The assistant should read the Drive Pattern CONSULT



data and drive time and convey driving instruction to the driver. It is the drivers responsibility to observe and react to traffic conditions.



Always drive the vehicle in a safe manner and obey all traffic laws.



^ To ensure all ECM Self Test requirements are met, drive the ENTIRE pattern whenever any SRT items indicate "INCOMPLETE."



^ Some vehicles require that sections of the Drive Pattern be driven two times to satisfy the "self diagnosis two trip logic." For vehicles



that require two trips the pre-check engine coolant temperature must be met before beginning Section 1 of the second trip.



5. Perform the Drive Pattern:



a. Make sure all Pre-Check conditions are met.



b. Drive the vehicle and carefully follow the specific instructions and time requirements listed in each section of the Drive Pattern.



NOTE: If you monitor the (B/FUEL SCHDL):



^ The Base Fuel Schedule (B/FUEL SCHDL) is an indication of engine load.



^ It will be easier to match high B/FUEL SCHDL values when driving up slight hills in the recommended gear range.



^ It will be easier to match low B/FUEL SCHDL values when driving down slight hills in the recommended gear range.



^ Turning the A/C compressor ON will increase the B/FUEL SCHDL value while turning it OFF will decrease the B/FUEL SCHDL value.



Step 6: Recheck for DTC



Upon completion of the Drive Pattern determine if any DTCs have been stored. Only in rare cases will this occur.



^ If a DTC has been stored after completing the Drive Pattern it must be repaired. Refer to ASIST for diagnostic and repair information.



NOTE: Normal warranty coverage will apply for DTC repairs.



^ Once the DTC is repaired, erase the stored DTC. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds, and then repeat the entire Drive Pattern (Step 5) to

"COMPLETE" the SRTs.



^ If no DTCs have been stored DO NOT touch "Erase" or all SRT items will reset to "INCOMPLETE."



Step 7: Confirm All SRTS "COMPLETE"



If all SRT items indicate "COMPLETE" the inspection is complete.



^ If Catalyst and/or 02 Sensor Monitors show "INCOMPLETE" perform step A or B below.



A. Check Self Learning Value and A/F ALPHA. If either value is + 10% or more above target of 100%, clear Self Learning Value.



^ Perform DTC diagnosis for P0171 or P0174 and check for the following possible causes:



> Intake air leaks



> Front heated oxygen sensors



> Injectors



> Exhaust gas leaks



> Incorrect fuel pressure



> Lack of fuel



> Mass airflow sensor



A. Check Self Learning Value and A/F ALPHA. If either value is -10% or more below target of 100% clear Self Learning Value.



^ Perform DTC diagnosis for P0172 or P0175 and check for the following possible causes:



> Intake air leaks



> Front heated oxygen sensors



> Injectors



> Exhaust gas leaks



> Incorrect fuel pressure



> Lack of fuel



> Mass airflow sensor



^ After repairs have been made, run the prescribed drive pattern and check that A/F ALPHA is within +/- 10% of the target of 100%



during the steady state portions of the drive cycle. If it is not, then continue repairs. If it is return to STEP 5.

IF YOU CONFIRM:



A "No Crank" (starter doesn't work) incident under all of the following conditions:



1. The vehicle sat for several hours (cold soak) with outside temperatures below 10锟斤拷 F (-12锟斤拷 C); and



2. The vehicle was then driven for a short period of time (5-10 minutes); and



3. The engine was then turned OFF for a short time (5-10 minutes); and



4. The engine would then not crank when a restart was attempted (starter doesn't work).



NOTE:



This TSB applies only if all of the above occurred.



ACTION:



Replace the Intelligent Power Distribution Module-I PDM (see the Parts Information).

IF YOU CONFIRM



There is a ticking, clicking, thumping, or knocking noise heard in the passenger compartment at idle. The noise could be from the engine



compartment.



ACTION



^ With the engine idling, feel the fuel damper hose while the noise is occurring. The fuel damper hose is located on the Bank 1 side of the engine.



^ If the vibration of the fuel damper hose coincides with the noise heard inside the vehicle, replace the fuel damper and attached hose on that



cylinder bank (Bank 1).



^ See the respective ESM and Engine Mechanical (EM) section for replacement of the damper with hose.



^ Confirm the noise at idle from the passenger compartment is not present.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) WARNING LIGHT DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

APPLIED VEHICLES:



All Infiniti vehicles with Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)



IF YOU CONFIRM



The TPMS warning light is illuminated (continuously or flashing)



ACTIONS



STEP 1: Turn ignition to "OFF" and then "ON" position (engine not required to be running).



^ If the TPMS warning light is continuously illuminated (not flashing) the TPMS is operating normally and has detected low tire pressure in one of



the tires. Go to STEP 2.



NOTE:



> Normal tire pressure maintenance is not covered under warranty.



> Some 2011 and newer models will display an alert in the Vehicle "CHECK TIRE information display near the speedometer. The alert will



read "Check Tire PRESSURE Pressure" or similar and will accompany the illuminated TPMS light.



^ If the TPMS warning light is flashing for approximately one minute there is a TPMS system malfunction. Do not go to Step 2. Instead check the



DTC and refer to the Service Manual for repair instructions.



STEP 2: Leave the ignition in the "ON" position* (engine is not required to be running) and set the tire pressure to the recommended pressure.



^ Refer below for Important Tire Pressure Information.



* Leaving the ignition in the ON position may allow the TPMS to detect the corrected tire pressure more quickly on 2009 and newer models



(WITHOUT having to drive the vehicle).



Important Tire Pressure Information:

Each vehicle is equipped with a "Tire and Loading Information" placard (see example in Figure 1).



For factory equipped tires follow the recommended code pressure on the placard to set the tire pressure on the vehicle.



Tire pressure can be affected by factors such as tire temperature, outside temperature, time and altitude.



^ Refer to ITB08-015 for additional information about these factors that affect tire pressure including seasonal temperature changes.



When tire pressure is low make sure it is not caused by a leak. If needed repair as necessary.



After tires are inflated to the recommended pressure the vehicle may need to be driven at speeds above 16 mph for the TPMS to turn off the low tire



pressure warning light. DO NOT USE CONSULT TO RESET THE TPMS.
