DRIVE BELT SYSTEM NOISE DIAGNOSIS



APPLIED VEHICLES:

There is noise coming from the drive belt(s) or drive belt pulley(s)



ACTION



Use the flow chart in this bulletin to help diagnose and identify the source / cause of the noise.

DRIVE BELT / PULLEY NOISE DIAGNOSIS FLOW CHART

Auto Tensioner Inspection (if equipped)



1. With the engine running at idle and the AC turned ON observe the pulley angular (side to side) movement (see Example 1):



^ See above table for maximum movement specification.



^ Visual comparison of movement with a known good vehicle is recommended.



2. With the engine running at idle and the AC turned ON observe the pulley axial/lateral (back and forth) movement (see Example 2):



^ Maximum movement specification is 1 mm.



^ Visual comparison of movement with a known good vehicle is recommended.



Idler Pulley / Manual Tensioner Inspection (if equipped)

No more than 1 mm of pulley rock should be visible.



Alternator One-way Clutch Pulley Inspection



CAUTION:



Be careful not to damage the rotor.



NOTE:



The following steps can be done while the alternator is installed on the vehicle if the drive belt is removed and the alternator electrical



connectors are disconnected.



1. Secure the rotor using a medium size screwdriver and a rolled shop towel.



2. Turn the pulley clockwise when viewed from the front.



^ Pulley should be locked.



^ If it rotates in both directions replace the alternator.



3. Turn the pulley counterclockwise when viewed from the front.



^ Pulley should turn with some dragging



^ If it locks or has unusual resistance replace the alternator.

WITH WINDOW ALL THE WAY UP



APPLIED VEHICLE: 2003 - 2005 G35 Sedan (V35)



IF YOU CONFIRM



A creak, pop, or ticking noise coming from inside a rear door (left or right) with the window all the way UP,



^ This noise may occur when driving over bumps or rough roads with the window rolled all the way up.



^ If the noise occurs, it will stop when the window is rolled down.

1. Replace the attaching bolts for window regulator-to-window (shown in Figure 1) with the shorter bolts listed in the Parts Information.



^ Refer to section GW in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) as needed for door disassembly and assembly information.



2. Test drive the vehicle to make sure the noise is gone.

2003-2004 G35: RATTLE NOISE FROM REAR VIEW MIRROR HARNESS COVER



APPLIED VEHICLES:



2003 and 2004 G35 (V35 and CV35) Sedan and Coupe



IF YOU CONFIRM:



There is a rattle noise from the rear view mirror area.



^ The noise may sound like it is coming from inside the the mirror.



Or



^ The noise may sound like it is coming from the dash area.



And

^ The noise is eliminated by pushing the rear view mirror harness cover (see Figure 1) against the windshield glass.



ACTION:



Resolve the incident by applying strips of felt cloth tape as shown in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.



Note:



Squeak and rattle repair in this bulletin may require the use of Chassis Ears Nissan Special tool J-39570 available from TECH-MATE at 1 800



662-2001.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



1. Confirm the noise is coming from just above and in front of the inside rearview mirror.



NOTE:



This rattle noise may sound like it is coming from the dash area.



^ This noise may occur when driving over bumps or rough roads.



^ Use chassis ears or other suitable listening tool to confirm noise exact location before proceeding.



2. Remove the trim cover from above the inside rearview mirror (Refer back to Figure 1).

3. Install 2 strips of felt cloth tape on the top and inside of the cover as shown in Figure 2.



^ Use felt cloth tape-P/N 68329-13E00-from the squeak and rattle repair Kit (J-43980).



^ Cut strips approximately 3/4 inch for the cover tabs.



^ Cut strips approximately 2-3/8 in./60 mm for the top and sides.



^ Make sure the felt tape covers the trim part that contacts windshield.



4. Reinstall the cover



5. Confirm the rattle is gone.

IF YOU CONFIRM



There is a noise coming from the front compression rod.



And



The bushing is damaged.



ACTIONS



Replace only the bushing not the compression rod assy. for this issue.

REQUIRED TOOLS



REMOVAL OF BUSHING



1. Remove the compression rod with ball joint from the vehicle. Refer to section FSU of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for removal and



installation procedure.

^ Check the taper part of the ball joint. If the taper part is damaged or scratched the compression rod assy. will have to be replaced.



2. The rubber tab on the center of the bushing the center of bushing and the center of ball joint should be aligned straight. Mark the original



bushing position onto compression rod also mark the opposite side.



3. Place the compression rod onto the hydraulic press so that it will come out on the opposite end of the rod.



4. Set Compression rod and tool for catching the bushing.



5. Set tool for pressing out bushing.



6. Make sure the bushing tools and hydraulic press are vertically aligned.



7. Press bushing out slowly. Pay attention that each tool and the bushing stay aligned vertically while pressing. Bushing should move with the



force shown in the chart above.



WARNING:



^ If more force appears to be needed tool may be misaligned and pressing on compression rod. Back press off and realign tools.



^ If the bushing cannot be moved by the Maximum Force listed below stop repair procedure and replace compression rod assy.



INSTALLATION OF BUSHING

1. Clean the interior part of the compression rod where the bushing was installed of any debris with an air hose and clean towel.



2. Only for 4WD vehicles if rust is present replace the compression rod assy.



NOTE:



4WD compression rod is made of iron and tends to rust easily.



3. Put the new bushing into the compression rod while matching the projection of bushing with mark



^ Do not apply any grease or lubricant.



^ Confirm compression rod direction.



^ Ball joint direction should be pointed upward.



4. Make sure the tools new bushing and hydraulic press are vertically aligned.



NOTE:



^ Be sure to use the correct bushing:



^ 2WD (alloy rod): 54570-AC70A



^ AWD (iron rod): 54570-AC71A



5. Press bushing in slowly. Pay attention that each tool and the bushing stay aligned vertically while pressing. Bushing should move with the



force shown in the chart above.



WARNING:



^ If more force appears to be needed bushing may be misaligned in compression rod. Back press off and realign as needed.



^ If the bushing cannot be pressed in by the Maximum Force to stop listed below stop repair procedure and replace compression rod



assy.

6. Confirm the surface between the collar and rod on both sides is flush.



7. Reset the tools compression rod and press to try to press the new bushing out. Make sure the bushing tools and hydraulic press are vertically



aligned.



8. Apply pressure slowly. Pay attention that each tool and the bushing stay aligned vertically while pressing. Bushing should NOT move with the



force shown in the chart above.



NOTE:



Do NOT exceed these pressures.



9. Press the compression rod bushing up to a maximum of 10 kN (1.12 tons force).



^ Confirm the bushing does not move.



^ If the bushing moves compression rod assy. has to be replaced.



10. Re-confirm the surface between the collar and rod for both sides is flat.



11. Align the cotter pin hole to the bushing center.



12. Mark the bushing and compression rod as shown in Figure 22.



^ It is recommended to use a yellow or white oil base pen.



13. Re-assemble the rod to the vehicle according to the ESM.

IF YOU CONFIRM



There is a ticking, clicking, thumping, or knocking noise heard in the passenger compartment at idle. The noise could be from the engine



compartment.



ACTION



^ With the engine idling, feel the fuel damper hose while the noise is occurring. The fuel damper hose is located on the Bank 1 side of the engine.



^ If the vibration of the fuel damper hose coincides with the noise heard inside the vehicle, replace the fuel damper and attached hose on that



cylinder bank (Bank 1).



^ See the respective ESM and Engine Mechanical (EM) section for replacement of the damper with hose.



^ Confirm the noise at idle from the passenger compartment is not present.

IF YOU CONFIRM:



A wind noise is coming from the sunroof glass area.

^ The noise can be isolated to the sunroof glass area if it stops after covering the sunroof seal with "painter's tape" or equivalent.



ACTION:



Adjust the Sunroof Glass Lid Assembly ("center it" and "level it" in the sunroof opening).



^ Refer to the SERVICE PROCEDURE of this bulletin for repair instructions.



^ For additional information, refer to the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM).



^ Do not replace the glass lid assembly (lid) when adjustment can resolve the incident, if it should occur.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



Adjust Sunroof Glass Lid Assembly



1. Clean the Sunroof Glass Lid Assembly (glass lid) seal and sunroof opening edge.



^ Use isopropyl alcohol or suitable cleaner.

2. Inspect the fit of the glass lid. Adjust as needed (refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 shown above).



^ Use the appropriate ESM as needed.



^ The front of the glass lid should be flush but no more than 0.5 mm below the roof surface.



^ The rear of the glass lid should be flush but no more than 0.5 mm above the roof surface.



^ The difference in the glass lid's front-to-rear gaps should be no greater than 1 mm.
