Steering wheel manual tilt adjustment lever will not stay in the locked position.



ACTION



^ Adjust the steering wheel manual tilt adjustment lever.



^ Tighten the lock nut and tilt shaft.



^ Do not replace the steering column assembly or the steering wheel manual tilt adjustment lever.

SERVICE PROCEDURE



1. Remove the 10 mm bolt from the Instrument Panel (IP) lower cover.



2. Partially remove the weather stripping from the flange as shown in Figure 2.



NOTE:



Do not pull weather strip completely off.

3. Remove the IP lower cover. NOTE: Do not disconnect the harness.



4. Remove the 2 screws holding the knee protector in place. Place the knee protector aside on a clean surface.



5. Disconnect the harness clip.



6. Lower the steering wheel manual tilt lever completely down.

7. Using a wrench loosen the lock nut located on the tilt shaft.



8. Move the steering wheel manual tilt adjustment lever 30 - 38 mm (1.2" - 1.5") from the column cover.



9. Tighten tilt shaft finger tight using a hexagon (allen) wrench to 9.4-10.8 N.m (0.96-1.10kg m 7-8 ft.lb).



10. Tighten the lock nut. Check to make sure the steering wheel manual tilt lever remains in the locked position.

11. Torque the lock nut to 13.5 - 17.6 N.m (1.38-1.80kg m 10.13 ft.lb.) with the hexagon (allen) wrench inserted in the tilt shaft as shown in



Figure 9.



12. Make sure the force needed to close the steering wheel manual tilt adjustment lever is within 60 - 90 N.m (6.11-9.17 kg m 44.25-66.38 ft.lb.)



and the lever/column stays in the locked position.



NOTE:



Check the release and locking of the tilt lever more than 3 times to make sure the manual tilt adjustment lever stays in the locked position.



13. Re-install knee protector IP lower cover and 10 mm bolt in reverse order of removal.
